Del Mar College will host its sixth Mexican American Studies Program Summer Seminar with sessions covering the program, literature, music, U.S. history and politics, art, humanities and the Spanish language. During a Merienda on the first day of the free event, participants will enjoy refreshments and a performance by folklorico dancer Teresa Saldivar followed by a presentation by Cecy Treviño de Oliveira, executive director and founder of Chicas Rock Music Camp. Cecilia Garcia Akers, the daughter of Dr. Hector P. and Wanda F. Garcia, will give the Mike M. Anzaldúa Jr. Keynote Address at 9 a.m. following a complimentary breakfast on Saturday, July 20. The physical therapist and author wrote The Inspiring Life of Texan Hector P. Garcia and is the president of the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded to promote the continuing historical relevance and legacy of her father who was a physician, veteran, activist and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. A book signing will follow the keynote address.
